Pollination Garden Workshop - Ongoing

Wanda J Gilbert CCCD DAS worked with the Homeschool Students and Parents on the “Pollinator Garden” at the Soil Conservation office. Phase 1 – selecting a location; Phase 2 - planting pollinator plants; Phase 3 - adding Landscaping Timbers around the Pollinator Garden; Phase 4 - laying Geotextile (Filter Fabric) and Phase 5 - Spreading Mulch around the plants.  In Spring 2024 addition plants and items will be added to the garden along with bench and tables for educational classes.  This is an ongoing and growing project.   The Pollination Garden is co-sponsored by Cumberland County Conservation District and Tennessee Valley Authority.

Tree Planting Workshop - November 27, 2023

Wanda J Gilbert CCCD DAS taught a “Tree Planting” Workshop on November 27, 2023 at the Soil Conservation office. Participants received a 3 gallon “Eastern White Pine” Tree and Containerized Tree Planting Guidelines.  Watched videos on Arbor Day – Planting a Container Tree and How to Properly Plant a Potted Tree.  The winner of the door prize was:  Clay Capps, he received a Tree Planting Spade.  The workshop was co-sponsored by Cumberland County Conservation District and Tennessee Valley Authority.

Agricultural Diversification Workshop  - November 27, 2023

Wanda J Gilbert CCCD DAS taught an “Agricultural Diversification” Workshop on November 27, 2023 at the Soil Conservation office. Participants received a 1 gallon “Blueberry Plant, Blackberry Plant and Raspberry Plant’ along with 25 Strawberry Plants and a 7-page List of Alternative Crops and Enterprises for Small Farm Diversification from the US Department of Agriculture.  Watched videos on What is Agricultural/Farm and Farms Food for Kids.  Discussed how agricultural diversification helps all pollinators. The winner of the door prize was:  Donald Tweedy Jr., he received a 2-mile Solar Fence Charger. The workshop was co-sponsored by Cumberland County Conservation District and Tennessee Valley Authority.

Participants received:  Pollinator Feeder/Waterers Kit; Bird Food; Bird Suet Cake and Holder; Hummingbird Feeder; Bird House; Decorated Bee Box; Where Would We BEE without Pollinators Placemat and Bookmark; Be A Friend to Pollinators Brochure. Watched three videos; What are Pollinators? What is Pollination? and Pollinators You Wouldn’t Consider.  The workshop was co-sponsored by Cumberland County Conservation District and Tennessee Valley Authority.

Participants received:  10 Amazing Facts about the Monarch Butterfly Handout; 10 Fascinating Facts about Monarch Butterflies Pamphlet; Pollination Fast Facts Sheet: How to Build a Bee Condo Guide; Pollinator Puzzle; 7 Things You Can Do for Pollinators Sheet; 5 Things Kids Can Do to Help Pollinators Factsheet; Bee Identification Guide; Food Industry Fact Sheet; Gardeners Fact Sheet; Farmers and Ranchers Fact Sheet; Ways You can Help Pollinators Guide; Life Cycle of a Butterfly Coloring Page with Crayons; Butterfly Feeder Instructions; Butterfly Cage with instructions on how to raise Butterflies; Caterpillar and Food with a coupon to purchase more Caterpillars.  Watched two videos; Life Cycle of the Monarch Butterfly and Migration of the Monarch Butterfly in Mexico City.  The workshop was co-sponsored by Cumberland County Conservation District and Tennessee Valley Authority.

Wanda J Gilbert CCCD DAS taught a “Energy Conservation” Workshop on July 15th at the Soil Conservation office. Participants received:  LED Light Bulbs and Energy Conservation Pamplet.  Attended a Field Trip to Tri-County EMC office in Burkesville then visited Citizens Bank of Cumberland County. Thank you to Citizens Bank of Cumberland County for the refreshments and t-shirts.  Thank you to Tri-County EMC, Peyton Young and Sammy Farlee for the tour and activities.  The workshop was co-sponsored by Cumberland County Conservation District and Tennessee Valley Authority

Participants received: Importance of Outdoor Air Quality Tip Sheet; Importance of Indoor Air Quality Tip Sheet; Ten Things you Should Know about Mold Guideline; Mold Cleanup Tips and Techniques; Open Burning – Learn Before You Burn Pamphlet; Wildflower Seed Pad; Smoke Alarm and Tire Gauge. Also watched a video on 17 Effective Ways to Improve Air Quality in your Home. The workshop was co-sponsored by Cumberland County Conservation District and Tennessee Valley Authority.

Participants received:  What is Kentucky’s Official State Soil: Crider Handout; Five Simple Ways to Improve Soil Quality Tip Sheet; Types of Soil and Soil Amendments Guideline; 10 Soil Facts Guide; 5 Questions Landowners Should Ask Their Farmers about Soil Health Pamphlet; Healthy Productive Soils for Growers Checklist; Unlock Your Farm’s Potential Pamphlet; Love the Soil Pamphlet, Soil is an Amazing Substance Tip Sheet; Soil’s Superheroes Coloring Book and Crayons.  Also received a Soil Testing Kit and watched two videos; All About Soils. Participants received:  Backyard Conservation Book (27 pages); Tips to Start Your Wildlife Garden Handout; Wildflower Seed Packet and Discussed Getting You Backyard Certified; Bird Feeder; Rain Gauge; Hummingbird Feeder; Bird Suet and Hanger; Flower Pots; Knee Pad and Garden Items. Also watched a 9 Minute Video on Backyard Conservation.  The workshop was co-sponsored by Cumberland County Conservation District and Tennessee Valley Authority.

Participants received:  Rain Barrel Kit (barrel, brass hose bibb, plumbers’ tape, screen and supplies) and Rain Gauge. Discussed the importance of collecting rainwater for gardens, flower beds and more.  What is good and bad water quality.  Best location for your rain barrel.  Ireland Tweedy preparing her barrel. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Workshop - September 22, 2022

Wanda J Gilbert CCCD DAS taught a “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” Workshop on September 22nd at the Soil Conservation office. Participants received:  Compost Barrel Kit (barrel, latch, hinges and supplies) and Recycle Trash Can.  Discussed the importance of recycling.  50 Things You Can Compost Handout (explaining the green and brown materials needed for composting) and best location for your compost barrel. ReaAnn Humphrey drilling holes in the barrel with assistances from Libby McIntsh, Jeannie Will and Doris Rohr. The workshop was co-sponsored by Cumberland County Conservation District and Tennessee Valley Authority.
